Since 2007, the focus of the 21st Century Fund for HVRHS has been on creating the Science and Technology Center on the campus of the Housatonic Valley Regional High School. This is a direct result of our mission to fund innovative and creative programs that engage and inspire kids.
We believe that students will need a clear understanding of the sciences, mathematics, and technology, and the ability to apply their knowledge and skills wisely and effectively in order to address the problems they will soon face: food, fuel and water shortages; epidemics, pollution, etc.
Unfortunately, American students, including our students at HVRHS, have fallen behind the rest of the world in mathematics and science. In one international study [Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS)], America’s high school seniors ranked 19th in mathematics and 16th in science. Regaining our place as world leaders depends on a willingness to invest in our children.
The STC will focus on the learners. Traditionally, a classroom is about learning the known. Here, students will explore the unknown. They will become biochemists, engineers, computer scientists, designers, geneticists, environmentalists, technicians, astronomers, roboticist, TV producers, journalists, and performers.
They will
test alternative energy sources
design and build their own inventions
clone plants
solve “crimes” using a DNA lab
run a TV studio.
The STC will be dedicated to fostering environmental stewardship, scientific inquiry, and creative endeavors through a school and community collaboration. It will offer opportunities for students, teachers and community members to explore and learn together.
We invite you to become involved in this effort, as fund-raisers, consultants to the STC advisory committee, mentors, and donors, participating in whatever way you can. Go to the Support Our Work for more information on how you can.
